Our Success Rates
Since opening in 2004 SEFC has helped hundreds of patients to achieve pregnancy. Currently more than 250 babies have been safely delivered through treatment at SEFC and a further 90 are expected in the next few months. Our results demonstrate a healthy record of success, particularly when you consider that we do not exclude patients whose chances of pregnancy might be lower than average. In addition, SEFC has an active intra uterine insemination programme. The average IUI pregnancy rate in 2007 was more than 18%. This compares favourably with the european average of 10%. Many clinics encourage women to undergo treatment by in vitro fertilisation rather than having a relatively simpler, safer and less expensive form of treatment.
Wider eligibility
We are proud that we do not use selection criteria to exclude patients who may have a lower chance of pregnancy simply to achieve higher rankings in the HFEA league tables. For example we do not exclude patients who have already undergone failed treatments elsewhere or those who have elevated FSH levels. We do not exclude women over the age of 42 years. So long as couples have a realistic expectation of the chance of success we are happy to carry out treatment. The average age of patients at SEFC is higher than the national average. Despite this our success rates remain very competitive. It is particularly encouraging that the cumulative pregnancy rates are in the order of 70% over three treatment cycles, be they IUI or IVF. This confirms that most couples will be successful in their fertility treatment even if this takes a little perseverance.

Understanding these Results
- HFEA do not yet licence IUI treatment so patient data may not
be consistent nationally
- Some clinics do not offer IUI as an initial alternative to IVF
- For suitable couples starting fertility treatment we recommend 3 or 4 cycles of IUI as the cumulative chance of pregnancy is higher then a single IVF cycle, less expensive, less invasive and require lower doses of stimulation drugs.

Understanding these Results
- As we are a new unit, our numbers of treatment cycles are small and we are not able to present meaningful data when it is broken down into individual age groups.
- A proportion of our patients undertaking IVF have already undertaken IUI without success. This identifies them to be couples for whom conception may be more difficult than the average experienced within an IVF-only clinic and, again, should be considered when comparing clinics’ data.
