Sperm Retrieval

Some men produce no sperm in their semen sample. There may be a problem with the production of sperm for congenital or genetic reasons. There may be an obstruction preventing sperm from being released (for example following a vasectomy). Sperm retrieval is carried out to determine whether sperm can be retrieved from epididymis or testes for use in fertility treatment. Prior to treatment screening must be carried out for HIV and hepatitis B & C. All sperm samples are stored for future use. In some cases it may not be possible to recover sperm.

Prior to sperm retrieval you may be advised to have some blood tests to assist the testicular function. This will give some insight into whether the treatment would be successful. You may also be asked to undergo some screening tests to exclude genetic disease.

Surgical sperm retrieval is carried out as a day case under sedation. We aim to collect enough sperm to carry out 3 or 4 treatment cycles for you if at all possible. Hopefully the procedure will only need to be carried out once.

If sperm are successfully retrieved, you will be asked to attend for a nurse consultation to plan the next stage in your treatment. If it is not possible to collect sperm there is little option but to discuss the possibility of treatment using donated sperm.
