Counselling
SEFC routinely offers a counselling service to all couples undergoing fertility treatment. You may see the clinic Counsellor at any time throughout your treatment to discuss any issues that may concern you. You may wish to see the Counsellor together or individually.
Who benefits from counselling?
Coping with fertility problems can be difficult and day-to-day life and relationships can be placed under great strain. Some people feel that they do not need help, with other recognise the need to speak to someone. Talking about fertility problems is not always easy and many people cope by “bottling things up”. The chance to release feelings and explore emotions can be a great release and can help you consider the full implications of your treatment. Exploring the issues and feelings around becoming a parent using donated sperm or eggs for example, may be complex and difficult so some people, to being able to talk freely in a relaxed and non-clinical environment can be very valuable. If you are having any treatment that uses donated sperm or donated embryos: or you are donating yourself, you are required to see the Counsellor as an initial step in the treatment programme. In such cases, no fees will be incurred for the first session with Counsellor.
Confidentiality
All consultations with the Counsellor are confidential. You will be seen in a comfortable and secure environment. SEFC staff will not be informed of any matters arising from counselling without your consent. The Counsellor will clearly explain what information may be passed to SEFC before counselling takes place for the first time. The Counsellor keeps a personal record of all counselling sessions. In assessment counselling where the clinic requests a report from the Counsellor regarding your suitability for treatment, your consent to forward a report to the clinic is required.
